Updated: Dec 6, 2024

At Artemis Ranch, we believe there’s no better way to connect with the world around you than to lace up your boots and hit the trails. With over 3,700 acres of pristine Texas Hill Country, our private hiking paths wind through breathtaking limestone formations and rolling hills, centuries-old oak groves, and wide-open savannah. Every step you take is an invitation to immerse yourself in nature’s wonders.

White rhinos, native to the grasslands and savannahs of Africa, are a symbol of resilience. Despite their name, they are not actually white—the term comes from a mistranslation of the Dutch word “wijd,” meaning wide, referring to the shape of their mouths. With fewer than 20,000 white rhinos remaining in the wild due to habitat loss and poaching, Khari’s presence at Artemis Ranch is a testament to the ranch’s dedication to preserving endangered species and educating the public about their plight.

Tank’s official name is Khari – a name meaning “Kingly” in Swahili. He lives in a carefully designed habitat that mirrors the open savannahs of his native environment while also proving him a spacious, comfortable heated barn for the (few!) chilly Texas nights. Guests to Artemis Ranch will have the unique chance to witness his gentle demeanor and imposing strength as he grazes under the Texas sun or wallows in his mud bath to stay cool and protect his skin. With his majestic horn and commanding presence, he is sure to leave a lasting impression on all who meet him.

“Welcoming Tank to Artemis Ranch is a phenomenal milestone. He represents not only an important and pivotal opportunity for education and awareness about the importance of conservation. Our hope is that every guest who meets Khari leaves with a deeper appreciation for the efforts needed to protect animals like him.”

Whether you’re visiting the ranch for a wedding, a corporate retreat, or a family vacation, encountering Khari is a highlight of the Artemis Ranch experience. Groups can embark on a wildlife safari, wedding guests can meet him as part of their unforgettable day, and those staying in the Cottage or Lodge can marvel at his grandeur as part of their private escape.
